SUMMARY:Guided Herp Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Wilber Lake on April 24th at 6pm for a guided Herp Walk to learn more about the world of amphibians. We will be meeting at the entrance on Wilber Lake Road\, located on the west side of the lake. This walk will be led by OCCA Field Technician Victoria Prouty and Dr. Elizabeth Bastiaans of SUNY Oneonta. \nAs we welcome spring’s warm\, rainy weather\, amphibians such as wood frogs and spotted salamanders begin their migration to vernal pools\, temporary pools fed by snowmelt and rain. They use these vernal pools to breed before heading back into the forest for the remainder of the year. We will explore the trail and visit nearby vernal pools\, where you will have the chance to observe and learn how to identify these fascinating species\, their egg masses\, and tadpoles. You may also see some forest-dwelling and lake-dwelling species\, such as red-backed salamanders and green frogs. \nThis experience highlights the vital role that these temporary pools play in wooded ecosystems and offers a unique opportunity to learn about amphibian life cycles and preferred habitats. Perfect for nature lovers of all ages\, this walk combines exploration\, education\, and a deeper appreciation for the wildlife that thrives right in our backyard. \nSign up at occainfo.org

SUMMARY:Forest Walk: Inside a Forester's Toolkit
DESCRIPTION:Join OCCA for a unique\, hands-on introduction to forest management at Thayer Farm. Led by professional consulting forester Kellen Murphy\, this program offers a behind-the-scenes look at how foresters read the landscape and make decisions that shape the health and future of our forests. \nWe’ll begin with a brief indoor overview (optional\, weather dependent)\, where Kellen will introduce the fundamentals of forest management planning—what landowners consider\, how goals are defined\, and the tools foresters use to assess forest conditions. Then we’ll head outside for a guided walk through the woods\, where participants will see these concepts in action. \nAlong the way\, we’ll explore how to evaluate tree health and species composition\, identify signs of past management or natural disturbance\, and discuss strategies for balancing ecological health\, wildlife habitat\, and long-term sustainability. Whether you’re a landowner\, outdoor enthusiast\, or simply curious about the woods around you\, this program will offer practical insights into how forests are cared for over time. \nKellen Murphy brings over a decade of experience managing private timberlands across New York and has developed forest management plans for more than 10\,000 acres . \nPlease wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for uneven terrain. \nSign up at occainfo.org

SUMMARY:Youth Learn to Row Camp
DESCRIPTION:Youth Learn to Row with Otsego Area Rowing\nAges: 13–18 (middle and high school students) Season: Summer sessions (on-water); optional indoor meetups during the off-season Our Youth Learn to Row program introduces middle and high school students to the sport of rowing in a fun\, safe\, and beginner-friendly environment. No prior experience is needed! Rowers will learn the basics of sculling (rowing with two oars) using stable boats and rowing machines to build confidence before venturing onto the lake. Classes are typically offered as one-week summer camps\, with small-group instruction from experienced volunteer coaches – including certified OAR members and former competitive rowers. We emphasize teamwork\, water safety\, and fitness in an enjoyable setting. Many participants discover not just a new sport\, but also new friends and a sense of personal confidence! \nWhat Youth Participants Learn:\n\nBoathouse & Equipment Basics – how to carry boats\, oars\, and set up a rowing shell.\nSafe Boat Handling – getting in and out of the boat\, balance techniques (with pontoons for added stability if needed).\nRowing Stroke Fundamentals – practice on land (ergometer/rowing machine) and then on the water.\nRowing Terminology – parts of the boat\, commands\, and how to row as part of a crew.\nWater Safety Practices – including what to do in the rare event of a capsize (coaches are always nearby in a safety launch).\n\nBy the end of a Learn to Row camp\, youth participants will be able to confidently row on Otsego Lake – and most importantly\, they’ll have fun and feel a sense of accomplishment. Consistent attendance during the session is important for safety and skill development. \nCost:\nThe Youth Learn to Row program is approximately $125 per week-long session\, which covers all equipment\, coaching\, and facility use. As a community-based nonprofit\, we strive to keep this fee low. Financial assistance may be available – please contact us if cost is a concern. \n2026 Camp Sessions:\n\nSession 1: July 20 – July 24\, 2026 (Mon–Fri\, 9am–12pm)\nSession 2: August 24 – 28\, 2026 (Mon–Fri\, 9am–12pm)\n\nSessions are held at Brookwood Point. Space is limited – early registration is encouraged. Successful completion of a Learn to Row session also qualifies students for the Youth Racing Team\, if they wish to continue rowing with OAR. \nSign up at https://otsegoarearowing.org/join/
