SUMMARY:First Day Hike at Glimmerglass State Park
DESCRIPTION:Start off 2023 with a hike! \nOne mile self-guided hike through the woods and along the shoreline of Otsego Lake. The trail is a loop and returns to the parking lot. The hike starts at 10:00 AM and the first 100 people will receive a First Day Hike giveaway. The hike closes at Dusk. Bathrooms are very limited so please plan accordingly. A Porta Jon is located at Beaver Pond and a Public Restroom is available at the Park Office if staffing allows. Trail surface might be snow and ice packed. Wear appropriate footwear/snowshoes for the conditions. Hiking/ski poles might be beneficial for balance. For more information please call (607) 547 8662.

SUMMARY:Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:The eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) is a tree of great beauty and great ecological significance. Sadly\, it is also threatened by the hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae)\, an invasive insect that has ravaged hemlocks from Georgia to Maine. This program includes an informational session covering the importance of hemlock trees and the life history and impacts of the hemlock woolly adelgid\, then shifts outdoors for field training in how to survey for hemlock woolly adelgid. We are seeking volunteers who will participate in surveys throughout the winter. \n\nThis program will take place indoors and outdoors. We will meet at the Morris Firehouse\, 117 Main Street\, Morris\, please use back entrance. Please be prepared to spend more than an hour outside. SUMMARY:Winter Living Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Come to the Rogers Center to celebrate winter. \nThis year’s lineup brings back many favorites\, like the horse-drawn sleigh/wagon rides\, winter weather safety demonstrations by the DEC\, the opportunity to try snowshoeing\, firepits for roasting marshmallows\, traditional woodcutting\, the chance to be a human birdfeeder\, and the artwork of a live ice sculptor. \nAdditionally\, indoors there are a variety of activities and booths for visitors to stop at\, including demonstrations by the local chapter of Trout Unlimited\, information about local hiking opportunity with the Bullthistle Hiking Club\, and birding tips from the Chenango County Bird Club (who are also providing sweet treats this year).  At the kids’ crafts tabled\, children will have the opportunity to make a traditional toy – all they need is a stick.

DESCRIPTION:Join OCCA Treasurer\, Jim Hill for a night of Naked Eye Astronomy on Saturday\, January 21\, from 7:00-8:30 pm at Mohican Farm in Springfield.  Hill will lead participants in an introduction to the night sky\, where Mars and Jupiter will be visible along with Orion in the east and some of the gorgeous 1st magnitude winter sky stars\, along with many more surprises. \nThe group will meet at the Mohican Farm workshop at 7:00 pm for a brief introduction before going outside.  Participants are encouraged to bring a camp chair to sit on and to dress warmly.  Program is free\, please pre-register using this form.
