Since 2009, the Butternut Valley Alliance has endeavored to help the Butternut Creek watershed to become an even better place to live, work and play. Our activities connect communities, protect the environment, and promote the arts. The Butternut Creek watershed comprises seven towns located along the Southwestern portion of Otsego County encompassing about 120 square miles and is home to roughly 7,500 residents. To fulfill our mission, BVA holds four large community-building events each year (On the Trail of Art, Summer Harvest Festival, Butternut Creek Fun Float and Butternut Valley Gravel Grinder) that aim to promote the arts and sustainable agriculture in the region and to encourage people to enjoy and care for the outdoors. BVA also presents public lectures on local history and regional environmental issues. In addition, BVA participates in water quality and invasive species monitoring, creek cleanup and buffer restoration, trail building and citizen science. In 2023, BVA received official status as NYS DEC forest stewards for three state forests in the Butternut Valley – General Jacob Morris State Forest, Wagner State Forest, and Texas School House State Forest.

The Oneonta Susquehanna Greenway (the OSG) is a partially-finished bicycle and pedestrian trail. Three of four sections are complete and open to the public. The finished trail will follow the Susquehanna River for approximately six miles in the city and town of Oneonta, New York. It will run from the Silas Lane Loop in the West End of Oneonta to Neahwa Park and around New Island in the city of Oneonta. A future possibility would be to continue out to Fortin Park in the East End of Oneonta.

The Greenway trails have become a popular recreational destination. During the winter months, cross country skiers and snowshoers enjoy the stillness of the winter river. In warmer weather, people walk, jog, bicycle and rollerblade along the river. Local educators take groups to the trails to learn about the diverse flora and fauna living in the varied habitat, as well as the history of Native Americans who depended on the river for so many aspects of their lives.

Larger, more comprehensive signs are planned for every section of the OSG.

There are currently three complete sections of the Greenway:

Silas Lane Trail, a 2-mile loop in the West End of Oneonta (off of I-88 exit 13),

Mill Race Trail in Neahwa Park, and

New Island Trails: more than 3 miles of trails on flat terrain by the river (off of Lettis Highway, I-88 exit 15).

Volunteers are welcome. The group has monthly meetings in Oneonta, and periodic trail maintenance days. Work is also underway to extend the Greenway up and down the Susquehanna River, in coordination with local governments. The next planned section of the Oneonta Susquehanna Greenway is a two-mile stretch extending eastward from the DEC fishing access site off Rte. 205 (near Silas Lane) along the river to Main Street. It will proceed on city sidewalks to Neahwa Place, connecting to the Mill Race Trail.

Otsego Land Trust protects healthy lands and clean waters by working with private landowners to conserve land into perpetuity and by acquiring lands through donations and grants that we can open to the public.

We understand a simple truth: when people connect with the land and water, they will care for them more deeply and be more responsible for assuring that they are protected now and for future generations.

OLT’s program of land acquisition is focused on the specific goal of encouraging meaningful connection to land and water through providing public access to special places. Our Blueway project accomplishes this goal.

Otsego Land Trust Blueway is a series of OLT owned and protected places that provide fishing, hiking, paddling, bird watching, and educational opportunities from Canadarago Lake to the Susquehanna River, including Brookwood Point on Otsego Lake.

Visit the following conservation areas along the Blueway Trail:

OLT’s conservation areas along the Blueway are free and open for your outdoor recreational and educational enjoyment. You can hike, bird watch, paddle, fish, or just relax and enjoy the peace of nature around you. Please, always strive to have as little impact on the land as possible. Practice “Leave No Trace” principles and be respectful of the land, native plants and animals, and other people.

The Blueway Project was supported with funding from the New York State Conservation Partnership Program and New York’s Environmental Protection Fund (EPF). The New York State Conservation Partnership Program is administered by the Land Trust Alliance, in coordination with the State Department of Environmental Conservation. Funding was also provided by the Canadarago Lake Improvement Association, the Royal Bank of Canada, the Chesapeake Conservancy, the Department of Environmental Conservation, The Nature Conservancy, and the Upper Susquehanna Coalition.

The Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society (DOAS), established in 1968, is a chapter of the National Audubon Society (1977). The chapter region encompasses the northern Catskill Mountains and the upper Susquehanna River areas of New York State. DOAS envisions a healthy world where people and wildlife thrive and natural resources are protected. The mission of Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society is to protect our natural environment and connect people with nature to benefit birds and other wildlife through conservation, education, research and advocacy. DOAS offers bird walks, programs, and events, including a summer camp for kids.

The Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society Sanctuary overlooking Oneonta, NY, is a 100 acre property providing marked hiking trails through a variety of habitats, such as open fields, second growth forest, old pastures, and mowed fields. A large wetland is accessible by trails and a short boardwalk. Located at 52 Grange Hall Rd. Spur, Oneonta, the Sanctuary is home to a large diversity of wildlife, including many bird species, mammals, amphibians and reptiles, plus a variety of native plants.

Trails at the Sanctuary vary in difficulty, but accessibility can be difficult due to rough terrain and hills. An accessible porta-john is available on the site. Resting benches are in place on the hill to the hawk watch.

The Sanctuary is also the site of the Franklin Mt. Hawkwatch, one of New York State’s premier fall hawk watches. It is particularly noted for late season flights of Red-tailed Hawks and Golden Eagles. Franklin Mt. provides a panoramic view of the Susquehanna River valley and surrounding hills of Otsego and Delaware Counties.

Other activities at the Sanctuary include an annual open house, a summer day camp for children, and a raptor banding station. The DOAS Sanctuary is open to the public from dawn to dusk, 365 days a year for passive use recreation (birdwatching, hiking, photography, etc.).

The DOAS website http://doas.us/ is a great resource and includes information and trail maps for Franklin Mountain.
