New Island Trails, part of the Oneonta Susquehanna Greenway
New Island is only accessible by foot or by bike.
To get there, park in Oneonta’s Catella Park (accessed from Neahwa Park) on David W. Brenner Road. Walk or bike along the fence toward the highway. At the corner you’ll see a gate, a sign to New Island, and a path to Lettis Highway. There are traffic lights and crosswalks for safety. A short walk along the Lettis Highway under Interstate 88 and past the entrance ramp gets you to another sign next to a break in the guard rail, where you’ll see a path.
There are hiking paths and mountain biking trails on New Island, as well as access to the Susquehanna River, where you may see a few anglers trying their luck.
