Silas Lane Trail, part of the Oneonta Susquehanna Greenway
Silas Lane, Oneonta (by Exit 13 of Interstate 88)
The Silas Lane Trail, the first section of the Oneonta Susquehanna Greenway to be completed, forms a 2-mile loop in the west end of Oneonta. It follows the river and wends through fields and past a swampy area.
Several Octet-ers have recommended Silas Lane as a good place for a hike close to Oneonta, and also to snowshoe or cross-country ski. People also appreciate the access to the Susquehanna River.
A pavilion provides a resting spot for hikers, a picnic area for trail users, and a location for classroom instruction for the school groups that use the trail. Â No reservations are necessary.
Trail markers along the Silas Lane Trail inform hikers about plants, animals, and local history.
The Oneonta Susquehanna Greenway (the OSG) is a partially-finished bicycle and pedestrian trail. Three of four sections are complete and open to the public. The finished trail will follow the Susquehanna River for approximately six miles in the city and town of Oneonta, New York. It will run from the Silas Lane Loop in the West End of Oneonta to Neahwa Park and around New Island in the City of Oneonta. A future possibility would be to continue out to Fortin Park in the East End of Oneonta.
Access to the Silas Lane Trail: From I-88, take Exit 13. Turn towards the mountains rather than the city, then take a right onto Silas Lane, you will pass the wastewater treatment plant. We recommend parking at the end of Silas Lane, by the School Bus Garage by the soccer fields. You can also access the trail from the OSG parking lot (on the right).
What Octet-ers are saying:
2/8/24: “Easy to get to.”
1/4/24: “Enjoyed the wide path. Very loud vehicle noises on the I-88 side, more muted on Susquehanna River side.”
12/19/23: “Path is flooded in parts due to recent heavy rainstorm. The Susquehanna River is very high. I expect the flooding will clear up in a few days but it may remain muddy.”
