Jean Miller Memorial Wildflower Walk

The 2022 Jean Miller Memorial Wildflower Walk at Gilbert Lake State Park resumes this year, in cooperation with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation – Central Region. Participants will meet at the beach area at 10 AM.

The walk is approximately 2 hours in the Park on easy to medium terrain and will be led by DOAS member and local plant expert Connie Tedesco. Bring water, insect repellent, binoculars if on hand, and your curiosity!

This is a free program. Pre-registration is required at the Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society website.

Evening Bird Watch and Woodcock Counting Hike

Spring weather is just around the corner, which means it time for the American Woodcock to perform its spring “sky dance”! Join Otsego Land Trust Staff and Delaware Otsego Audubon Society for an evening bird watch and Woodcock Counting Hike at Parslow Road Conservation Area. Local birders, Bob Donnelly, Charlie Scheim and Sandy Bright will lead two hikes, the first on April 6th and the second on April 20th. Both hikes will begin at 7:30 and end roughly around 9:00 pm.

American Woodcock spend most of their time hidden in fields and on the forest floor, where they probe for earthworms. But on spring nights, males perform very conspicuous displays, giving a buzzy peent call, then launching into the air. Their erratic display flight includes a distinctive, twittering flight sound and ends with a steep dive back to the ground. The wet thickets, shrubby swamps, and open fields at Parslow Road Conservation Area are ideal habitats for these interesting birds that have unfortunately seen a decline in population over the years.

The hike will begin at 7:30 pm with a walk on the trail listening and looking for the birds that inhabit this protected property. The sun is expected to set at 7:30 pm at which time the group will position itself in the best location to view and count the Woodcocks. The hike will be on the trail, but it may be wet, so please dress appropriately. A headlamp or flashlight and binoculars are recommended. Hike at Emmons Pond Bog Preserve

On Sunday, June 16 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM, Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society Member and local Environmental Educator, Chris DeCesare will lead a walk to observe the plants and animals of Emmons Pond Bog Preserve. This property is managed by the Nature Conservancy and includes meadow, woods, and wetland areas to explore. We’ll discuss the plants that grow specifically in a bog environment and look for signs of birds and other animals in the field and forest as we make our way around the 1.4 mile trail.

Binoculars and sturdy walking shoes are recommended. Meet at the Preserve entrance on White Hill Road. For additional details, contact Chris DeCesare at 607-244-5496 or chris.decesare444@gmail.com.
